Hiking Trail: Gavalochori – Douliana – Tsikoliana – Litsarda – Xirosterni 🥾🌿

A marked hiking trail runs through traditional Cretan villages, allowing you to discover the true gems of the Apokoronas region. 🏡 It is a nearly 13-kilometre walk through agricultural land, olive groves, and paths winding through cypress forests. 🌿🫒

It is a wonderful opportunity to experience Crete without the tourist gloss — as the locals know and live it. 🇬🇷 Peaceful and authentic, the area is filled with stone houses, small churches, and places where time moves at its own pace. 🏛️⏳

Start in Gavalochori, but don’t forget to enjoy a morning Greek coffee at Kafenio Elpída, right in the centre of the village. ☕ You will also spot the trail markers there — first on posts and later as white-and-red markings. 🚩 In Douliana, stop for a light snack, and head to Vamos for lunch. 🍽️ Along the way, you can also take a break with a glass of fresh orange juice in Litsarda or Xirosterni. 🍊

🤗 Don’t rush. Visit the small local churches, sit in the shade of the mighty plane tree by the Venetian wells in Gavalochori, and allow yourself a moment without a plan. 🌳 These are the moments that stay with you the longest. ✨

The route mainly follows country roads, old stone paths, and forest trails, although some short sections run along paved roads. 🛤️

Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and set aside most of the day for this hike. 👟💧 After all, it is not about reaching the destination as quickly as possible, but about experiencing the extraordinary natural beauty of Apokoronas along the way. 🌿🥾
