🇬🇷If you’re planning to stay in Gavalochori at the beginning of August, you’ll have a wonderful opportunity to experience panigiri – one of the most authentic traditions of Crete.

💃A panigiri is a nighttime village celebration with live traditional music, dancing, and simple local food. The festivities usually begin around 10:00 p.m., with the live music starting at about 11:00 p.m. The celebration often continues until 4:00 a.m.

👉In Gavalochori, the event takes place on the school playground next to the old village school.

💙🩵🤍Locals and visitors gather around long shared tables to eat, chat, and dance together. You’ll see everyone there – children and grandparents, elegantly dressed women, and men wearing the traditional black Cretan outfit. It’s a true celebration of the local community and a beautiful tribute to Cretan traditions.

👉Panigiri in Gavalochori usually takes place during the first days of August. You can find information about the event on posters displayed around the village and nearby areas. If your visit doesn’t coincide with the Gavalochori celebration, keep an eye out for posters advertising panigiri in the surrounding villages. The largest number of these celebrations takes place around August 15.
