the historical Venetian wells

A place of foremost interest by Gavalochori is the complex of 24 Venetian Wells.  It is located about 1 km outside the village, just before the village cemetery.  These wells played an important role in the society of Gavalochori, both during the Venetian period and later.

Although each house had its own cistern for covering its watering needs, the villagers walked up to the 24 wells to water their animals and meet each other.  In the 1960s, some of the wells were closed so as to water the village.

Next to the wells there is a creek with an old Venetian bridge.
